Long draw spinning is the traditional way to produce Woollen yarn, made at arm’s length of single thread rather than a worsted short draw yarn which is based on spinning in a triangle of wool just a few inches at a time. Long Draw is a satisfying skill and easy to learn and quickly you can produce balanced quality yarn quickly…and its great fun too. Long draw was standard practice in medieval times; our logo is based on an image from the 14C Luttrell Psalter. The long draw method produces quality woollen-type yarns ideal for knitting and weaving and can even be done ‘in the grease’, ie with unwashed wool straight from the sheep which is time-saving in terms of washing, combing and carding. Other spinning methods include short draw, worsted and core spinning…all of which have their pros and cons and are used by our members for specific projects. Many of our members also spin longdraw on drop spindles – truly the earliest form of spinning!
